Let’s have a look at numbers. The Pustertal valley covers an area of 2,071 sq km. This is about 28% of South Tyrol. About 68,000 people live here. Only 25% of that area is at an altitude between 500 and 1,000 m. More than half of it is situated between 1,000 und 2,000 m, the rest above. That means: rarely no bottom, lots of hill-sides, lots of woods (green valleys and good air), mountains and glaciers.

The highest mountain is the Hochfeiler (3,056 m) in the Zillertal valley; the most famous one is the Kronplatz. Agriculture, crafts, trade and tourism have had a great input on labour. Lots of the rural tradition has been held up. The farms of the Pustertal valley consist of a separate farmstead and a barn or have both combined within one building. Quite a few big farmhouses with traditional ovens reach out of the woods and look down the sunny sides to the valley greeting people going by. The mountains make the valley so attractive. The Dolomites on the one side, the Alps on the other. All you can see are hills, rocks and woods. Romantic and sunny plateaus, an unexpected turn within the various paths, small hamlets, picturesque castles, venerable churches and chapels and everything else modern people need surround you. Dolomites - Brenta Dolomites

 

The Dolomites are the symbol of Trentino. These unique mountains are renowned for the fiery red colour their rocks take on when they reflect the sun's rays at dawn and dusk.
The Dolomites in Trentino can be broken down into two main ranges: the Eastern Dolomites and the Brenta Dolomites.
The Brenta Dolomites are part of the Retic Alps - a 40 km long mountain range that reaches its peak at 3,173 m on the Cima Tosa. A section of the Brenta Dolomites is located inside the Adamello-Brenta Nature Reserve. The Reserve's territory features paths, rock-climbing trails and wonderful mountain biking itineraries in addition to panoramic routes for climbs and excursions, welcoming mountain huts and dairies where traditional local products can be savoured.
The Eastern Dolomites - know as Monti Pallidi - are Trentino's rock giants. They are all that remains of what was once a coral reef. These mountains emerged from the sea and were sculpted by the water, wind and ice to become a series of peaks, spires and summits. The Queen of the Eastern Dolomites is Marmolada (3,342 m), which is their most famous mountain, together with Sass Pordoi, (2,950 m) and offers visitors a complete, 360° view over the Dolomites. Those who love sports, winter sports and mountain hiking will find their heart's desire in the Dolomites.

Changes in slope, detours, challenging sections and fascinating views. Some of the most celebrated pistes in the world are found in Trentino and feature unique characteristics. Surrounded by unsurpassed natural landscapes, they are subjected to a daily maintenance regime to guarantee safety and ensure that you enjoy real thrill.

EASTERN DOLOMITES

In Val di Fassa, the famed Tomba Piste on Ciampedie was used by the Italian ski champion as a training ground, while the Ciampac Piste at Alba di Canazei has a gradient of over 28% and significant height difference, making it very challenging. The European Ski Cup is held here. The San Pellegrino Pass has a myriad of shapes and snow on the ground even in spring, while the Col Margherita Piste starts at 2500 m and is almost 3 km in length, with a height difference of 650 m.

In Val di Fiemme, the Olimpia is the most spectacular and exciting black piste in the Cermis Alps. The piste is more than 7 km long and a goodly section of it unfurls within the forest. The Agnello Piste in Pampeago is 2.5 km in length, with numerous detours as well as a drop of 400 m.

The spectacular Tognola Piste is found in San Martino di Castrozza, and has been specifically approved for the Giant, Special and SuperG.

BRENTA DOLOMITES

The Miramonti Couloir in Madonna di Campiglio is very technical. Also known as 3-Tre, it has a gradient of up to 55% and curves which must be taken in a jump. It has also played host to several editions of the World Cup. The Competition Piste at Pinzolo is 1100 m long and has a drop of 300 m. It is used to hold the races of the Trofeo Topolino.

The Nera of Folgarida in Val di Sole is both exhilarating and challenging, and is used for a number of different skiing and snowboarding competitions. The Paradiso Piste is located on the Tonale Pass. This challenging black piste begins at 3000 m, inside the Presena glacier basin. It is more than 5 km long and has a drop of almost 600 m.

The Olimpica Due in Paganella changes direction continuously, is 5 km long and a 1000 m drop, taking visitors to Andalo.
For those who like to ski in Pinzolo, the biggest news is the opening of the new (8-person, high-speed) Tulot gondola lift, which serve the new DoloMitica piste. The slope will run down into the valley with two variants: Star, for expert skiers (3.5km long, or just over 2mi); and Tour, for everyone else (5.8km, or over 3.5mi).

FOLGARIA PLATEAU

The Salizzona Piste on the Folgaria Plateau is both thrillingly challenging and very technical, with its sudden slope changes. The piste starts at 1650 m and has a drop of approximately 300 m.

TRENTO MONTE BONDONE

The Gran Pista is located on Monte Bondone. Renamed Trentino's Super-piste, it is highly satisfying because it is extremely varied, with its 3.5 km in length and drop of 800 m.

Night skiing

Skiing down a well-lit piste on a calm, moonlit evening is an unforgettable experience. There are numerous floodlit pistes in Trentino, which allow visitors to savour this experience.

The first ski area to offer this experience was Madonna di Campiglio. Since 1998, its 3-Tre piste has been lit, so that Skiing World Cup slalom competitions could be held at night. The final part of this famous piste - the Canalone Miramonti - is equipped for night skiing

You can also enjoy a night out on your skis under the stars in other locations, such as on the Biancaneve piste in Marilleva and on the black section of the Stadio dello Slalom in Folgaria (the last 400 m).

In Pozza di Fassa the Fis Aloch piste is very popular.  A 5 km section of the Ciancoal ring is also lit at night for cross-country skiers, as is the cross-country ski centre Lago di Tesero.

At San Martino di Castrozza, an innovative lighting system using balls has been installed on 2 km of the Col Verde piste, with extremely pleasing results.  A 3 km section of the Andalo cross-country ring is also illuminated at night as it winds its way through the woods near the lake.

Also in Valsugana you can ski at night. In the ski area Brocon, immersed in the splendid setting of the chain Lagorai-Cima d'Asta, the Ski Lagorai provides several flood-lit slopes: the learning area, the snow park LGR Playground and 2 ski runs.
Opening : Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.

A FUN-PACK START TO THE SEASON

The Dolomiti Superski ski districts are also renowned for their traditions and fun events organized mainly at the start of the season, introducing skiers to the world of fun on the snow and the festive Christmas atmosphere. And the choice could not be wider:
From 25th November 2011, in Brunico and Bressanone the traditional Christmas market begins and lasts till 6th January 2012.
On 2nd December 2011, in Santa Cristina in Val Gardena the romantic Christmas market begins, with its wide range of small gifts and other items on sale at the many stalls, following the sweet aroma of warm apple juice, cinnamon and vin brulé.
From 3rd December 2011, in Castelrotto, as part of the program “Christmas in Castelrotto”, local handcrafts, food specials and music will be presented on town square
On 9th December 2011, at Dobbiaco it is the time of the Krampus, little devil creatures which accompany Saint Nicholas, the traditional Tyrolean religious figure that brings gifts to children. His little demons will however pick a bone only with those who have not been good.
From 4th December 2011 to 8th January 2012, Tesero in Val di Fiemme will show his traditional cribs in a big exhibition during Christmas' time.
On 11th December, Alpe di Siusi is celebrating winter opening with a rich program and at the same time, Civetta is introducing the new winter season as well with the Snow Festa.
From 16th to 19th December, Cortina d'Ampezzo will become sweet thank to the “Eurochocolate Ski”, a mix of chocolate art show and fun on snow, in front of the amazing Tofane mountains.

Today, the seasonal rules that once decreed that ski-mountaineering and snowshoe outings were activities exclusively relegated to the spring are a thing of the past.
Now, an increasingly large number of trails can be glimpsed as soon as the first sprinkling of snow makes its appearance on "our" mountains. These mark a search for silent, uncontaminated spots, where visitors can savour the purity of the Alps.
The itineraries described in this section have been selected and prepared by Franco Gionco, who is a great expert as well as a great lover of the mountains. He boasts an array of collaborations with specialist magazines and has prepared reports on ski-mountaineering, travel, and adventure all around the world, in every season of the year.

He has worked in the sector for more than ten years, promoting sport and respect for nature. For his efforts, Gionco has been bestowed the highly prestigious and internationally renowned Fair Play Mecenate "Lo sport oltre lo sport" award.

Fall-Line’s Top Runs

Saslong in Val Gardena – classic downhill slope, very steep and a regular feature in the World Cup downhill racing calendar. A great opportunity to see what the pros expose themselves to.

Gran Risa in Alta Badia –  is another black slope that is scarily steep. It is also another World Cup regular and has a difference in height of 448 metres over 1255 metres with a maximum gradient of 53%. it’s a breathtaking descent in the heart of the woods.

La Longia in Val Gardena – is a very long run from the top of Seceda, a peak reached by gondola from the town of ortisei. La Longia has a vertical drop of about 1230m and winds 9km along high ridges, down wide fields and through narrow ravines and past a frozen waterfall.

Trametsch in Val d'Isarco – is another testingly long black track with bends and sudden changes of slope to make for a varied, fun ski. It runs from the Plose to Bressanone.

The Hermegg black run in Kronplatz is over five kilometres along and a great way to get the legs and head working as there’s a drop of 1,300 metres in altitude along the way – one for the fitter types.

The Silvester black run in Kronplatz – with a similar length and drop in altitude to hermegg delivers a rollercoaster of fun for advanced skiers.

Magical Mountain Huts

The experience of reaching a mountain hutby snowmobile, on snowshoes or even on foot, surrounded by silence is unforgettable. Savour the striking atmospheres of an evening spent on the mountains, sitting in front of a fireplace and enjoying the flavours of Trentino's dishes, before perhaps taking a thrilling sled ride back down by torchlight.

Dinner in a Trentino mountain hut is a unique experience. A voyage of discovery among a myriad of flavours, giving guests a chance to taste dishes such as grilled polenta with cheese or mushrooms, strangolapreti, orzotto and game as well as traditional cold cuts, salamis and cheeses, and taste the much cherished deserts and grappas that traditionally bring a mountain meal to a close.

In winter, dinner is served in mountain huts throughout Trentino's skiing districts, with guests travelling up the slopes on snowmobiles or snow-cats - and in some cases even making their way back down on sleds or using snowshoes.

Evenings in Val di Fassa at the Baita Ciampié in Val San Nicolò - a branch valley of the Val di Fassa - and at the Rifugio Fuchiade in Passo San Pellegrino are truly extraordinary, as are those in Val di Fiemme, at the Baita Caserina on the Alpe di Pampeago, the Baita Ciamp de le Strie on the Alpe di Lusia or at the Capanna Cervino in Passo Rolle.

In Val di Sole, wonderful evenings can also be enjoyed at the Rifugio Orso Bruno, at the Rifugio Solander or at the Malga Panciana in Marilleva as well as at the Chalet degli Angeli  in Folgarida and the Rifugio Scoiattolo and Doss dei Gembri in Peio.

The Cascina Zeledria, Malga Ritorto, Malga Montagnoli and the restaurant Boch and the Stoppani Grosté in Madonna di Campiglio can be reached on snow-cats in the evenings.

In Paganella, visitors can spend the evening at Baita Pineta, Casina Bruniol and La Tana dell'Ermellino - which also provides horse-drawn sleighs for transport. The Stella d'Italia mountain hut is open in Folgaria, as well as the Rifugio Baita Tonda (Serrada) and the restaurant Malga Ortesino, while in Lavarone it's possibe to dine at the  restaurant refuge Tana Incantata on Mount Tablat.

Winter is at its best in Trentino.
