The Dolomites are the symbol of Trentino. These unique mountains are renowned for the fiery red colour their rocks take on when they reflect the sun's rays at dawn and dusk.
The Dolomites in Trentino can be broken down into two main ranges: the Eastern Dolomites and the Brenta Dolomites.
The Brenta Dolomites are part of the Retic Alps - a 40 km long mountain range that reaches its peak at 3,173 m on the Cima Tosa. A section of the Brenta Dolomites is located inside the Adamello-Brenta Nature Reserve. The Reserve's territory features paths, rock-climbing trails and wonderful mountain biking itineraries in addition to panoramic routes for climbs and excursions, welcoming mountain huts and dairies where traditional local products can be savoured.
The Eastern Dolomites - know as Monti Pallidi - are Trentino's rock giants. They are all that remains of what was once a coral reef. These mountains emerged from the sea and were sculpted by the water, wind and ice to become a series of peaks, spires and summits. The Queen of the Eastern Dolomites is Marmolada (3,342 m), which is their most famous mountain, together with Sass Pordoi, (2,950 m) and offers visitors a complete, 360° view over the Dolomites. Those who love sports, winter sports and mountain hiking will find their heart's desire in the Dolomites.

Dolomites - Brenta Dolomites

Cult Pistes

Changes in slope, detours, challenging sections and fascinating views. Some of the most celebrated pistes in the world are found in Trentino and feature unique characteristics. Also known as 3-Tre, it has a gradient of up to 55% and curves which must be taken in a jump. It has also played host to several editions of the World Cup. The Competition Piste at Pinzolo is 1100 m long and has a drop of 300 m. There are numerous floodlit pistes in Trentino, which allow visitors to savour this experience.

The first ski area to offer this experience was Madonna di Campiglio. Since 1998, its 3-Tre piste has been lit, so that Skiing World Cup slalom competitions could be held at night. The final part of this famous piste - the Canalone Miramonti - is equipped for night skiing

You can also enjoy a night out on your skis under the stars in other locations, such as on the Biancaneve piste in Marilleva and on the black section of the Stadio dello Slalom in Folgaria (the last 400 m).

In Pozza di Fassa the Fis Aloch piste is very popular. A 5 km section of the Ciancoal ring is also lit at night for cross-country skiers, as is the cross-country ski centre Lago di Tesero.

At San Martino di Castrozza, an innovative lighting system using balls has been installed on 2 km of the Col Verde piste, with extremely pleasing results. A 3 km section of the Andalo cross-country ring is also illuminated at night as it winds its way through the woods near the lake.

Also in Valsugana you can ski at night. In the ski area Brocon, immersed in the splendid setting of the chain Lagorai-Cima d'Asta, the Ski Lagorai provides several flood-lit slopes: the learning area, the snow park LGR Playground and 2 ski runs.
Opening : Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights from 7.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.

A FUN-PACK START TO THE SEASON

The Dolomiti Superski ski districts are also renowned for their traditions and fun events organized mainly at the start of the season, introducing skiers to the world of fun on the snow and the festive Christmas atmosphere. These mark a search for silent, uncontaminated spots, where visitors can savour the purity of the Alps.
The itineraries described in this section have been selected and prepared by Franco Gionco, who is a great expert as well as a great lover of the mountains. He boasts an array of collaborations with specialist magazines and has prepared reports on ski-mountaineering, travel, and adventure all around the world, in every season of the year.

He has worked in the sector for more than ten years, promoting sport and respect for nature. For his efforts, Gionco has been bestowed the highly prestigious and internationally renowned Fair Play Mecenate "Lo sport oltre lo sport" award.

The itineraries contained here are described in a very essential manner to discourage dangerous improvisations.
All those who require further information on the descriptions of the itinerary are invited address these to a companion with proven skills as well as to the Alpine Guides present in all of Trentino's most important locations.

Source: Ski-mountaineering and Snowshoes www.visittrentino.it

Fall-Line Skiing in Dolomites

Fall-Line’s Top Runs

Saslong in Val Gardena – classic downhill slope, very steep and a regular feature in the World Cup downhill racing calendar. A great opportunity to see what the pros expose themselves to.

Gran Risa in Alta Badia – is another black slope that is scarily steep. It is also another World Cup regular and has a difference in height of 448 metres over 1255 metres with a maximum gradient of 53%. it’s a breathtaking descent in the heart of the woods.

La Longia in Val Gardena – is a very long run from the top of Seceda, a peak reached by gondola from the town of ortisei. La Longia has a vertical drop of about 1230m and winds 9km along high ridges, down wide fields and through narrow ravines and past a frozen waterfall.

Trametsch in Val d'Isarco – is another testingly long black track with bends and sudden changes of slope to make for a varied, fun ski. White snows blanket the Dolomites and their landscapes, giving them a magical appearance and presenting visitors with the myriad of choices for entertainment: alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, carving, ski-mountaineering, as well as skating, sled rides and all of the other activities that can be enjoyed on the snow and ice here. Some of the largest skiing districts in the world are found in the area, featuring 800 km of pistes with over 300 avant-garde, swift and comfortable ski-lifts as well as guaranteed skiing conditions thanks to the modern programmed snow systems employed in the area.

The latest technology is harnessed for the benefit of winter sports in the Dolomiti Superski and Skirama areas - the skipass system which allows you to ski in all of Trentino's valleys with just two passes. One-of-a-kind slopes, these veritable and challenging cult pistes provide real thrills with their detours, changes in slopes and awe-inspiring landscapes. Lastly, some ski areas are also more suited to beginners, with specialist ski instructors, snow games and many other outdoor activities for the whole family.

All of the ski areas in Trentino - from the Fassa, Fiemme and Primiero Dolomites to the Brenta Dolomites, the Paganella Plateau, Madonna di Campiglio, Val di Sole and Tonale - have become a point of reference as well as a choice destination among winter sports lovers, because of the top quality tourist accommodation available there as well as the warmth of the hospitality in Trentino. Choosing Trentino also means choosing safety. The Snow Friend project employs specialist operators and forest guards. The aim of the project is to provide prevention, raise awareness of the rules among skiers, and supply support during first aid operations on the pistes. In sum, Trentino has made every effort to maximise fun and ensure that your winter holiday becomes a truly unforgettable experience.

Source: VisitTrentino.it

Snowkidz - Campaign

What is the FIS Campaign 'Bring Children to the Snow'?

In November 2008, the FIS Council decided to initiate a campaign to 'Bring Children to the Snow'. Its roots were based in Norway, where it then spread to Scandinavia and Russia as skiing became a proven way to move from one place to another during the hard winters.

Cross-country is the original and in terms of participation the most popular of the nordic ski sports, which are so-named because of their growth in northern Europe (as opposed to alpine, which draws its name from the Alps).

In modern times, nordic skiing was popular long before its alpine successor, and Norway is generally considered to be the cradle of skiing competitions. The Huseby races were first held in 1879 and the famous Holmenkollen in 1892. The nordic combined event - combining jumping and cross-country skiing - was originally looked upon as the premier event in the sport and it wasn’t until 1900 that a separate cross-country race, at a distance of 30 kilometres, was run at the Holmenkollen.
Cross-Country Skiing Today

The most important series of competitions is concentrated in the FIS World Cup with 12 to 16 individual competitions and six to eight relays. Up to 90 female and 100 male athletes generally compete in these high-level competitions. Apart from the FIS World Cup, other important competitions include Continental Cups, FIS level, junior and National Championships as well as long-distance mass participation races including a FIS Marathon Cup.

For years, cross-country skiing meant only one technique: “diagonal stride" where both skis stay in prepared tracks. Skiers put “kick" and “glide" waxes on the bottom of each ski; the kick wax grips on uphill sections while glide wax helps propel the skier through downhill sections or over flat or rolling terrain.

During the 1982 FIS World Cup season - the first official FIS World Cup season - Bill Koch of the United States popularised the “skating" technique (or “freestyle" as opposed to the “classic" diagonal stride). The skating technique had been used previously by long-distance skiers, mostly in Scandinavia: one ski in the tracks, the other pushing off to gain speed. Eventually, skating, which is faster than classic technique, evolved to today’s style where skiers use a trackless course (except where tracks are installed to help skiers through tricky turns or transitional sections).
Competition

The FIS World Cup Series, FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and at the Olympic Winter Games, include twelve different cross-country skiing events. Ladies compete in the sprint, team sprint, 10km, 15km pursuit, 30km mass start, and 4x5km relay. Men compete in sprint, team sprint, 15km, 30km pursuit, 50km mass start and 4x10km relay. A variety of other distances are contested at Continental Cup, FIS, junior and national level.
Mass Start

Competitors start simultaneously, lined up in rows. The first competitor across the finish wins the race.
Interval Start

Competitors start in intervals of 30 or 15 seconds depending on the event. The athlete with the fastest individual time wins.
Relays

A team consists of four athletes, each of whom skis one leg of the race and then tags off to a team-mate. The relay has a mass start.
Sprint Events

The sprint begins with individual time trials on the sprint course with a 15 second interval start. The fastest 30 athletes move on to elimination heats. The top two finishers in each quarter-final advance to the semi-final rounds that are held as two heats of four athletes each. The final round consists of one heat of four athletes (two from each semi-final heat).
Team Sprint Events

The team sprint event consists of semi-final and final rounds. In the semi-final heats there are 10 or more teams consisting of two athletes (A and B) who pass the relay to each other three times (A, B, A, B, A, B). The best five teams qualify for the final.
Pursuit Events

The pursuit events have a mass start and the athletes use both techniques within the same race. During a pit stop at the stadium after half of the race distance has been completed, the athletes change equipment from the classical to free technique.
List of events

The following events feature on the programmes of the FIS World Cup, FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and the Olympic Winter Games. For the classical technique, the track must be prepared with one classical track (two parallel grooves) in the ideal line.
Techniques

In cross-country skiing, there are two techniques. In the classical technique, the skis are prepared with kick wax which creates friction when in contact with the snow and allows the athlete to ski in "diagonal or classical style" along pre-set parallel tracks. In free technique, the skis are prepared with only glide wax and forward motion is created by using the edges of the skis, also called skating. In both techniques, the competitors use ski poles to improve their forward propulsion.
Starting Order

In events with an interval start the starting order is randomly drawn within four groups of competitors. The placing of the seeded group or "red group" of the 30 best athletes is decided at the team captains’ meeting after reviewing the weather conditions. This is done to ensure fair and optimal conditions for the best athletes. The Jury can decide to introduce fifth group for some athletes.

In mass start events competitors start simultaneously lined up in rows according to previous results with the best ones starting in the first positions.

In team sprint events competitors start in two lines according to the total of FIS points of team members.

Relay start positions for FIS World Cup races are based on the Nations Cup standings; whilst at the FIS World Championships or Olympic Winter Games they are based on the results of the major event that took place the preceding season (FIS World Championships or Olympic Winter Games).
Entries for Relays

For relays, team captains may initially enter up to six athletes at the team captains’ meeting. The final composition of the teams must be given by the team captains at the latest two (2) hours before the start.
Tie-break Rules

In races with individual start, a tie of two or more athletes with the same time remains as such. In the mass start, sprint and relay races, a photo-finish (showing the tip of the shoe crossing the finish line) decides the ranking between two or more athletes reaching the finish line at the same time. If the photo-finish cannot decide the ranking, the athletes remain tied.
Lapping

An athlete or a team overlapped during mass start races has to leave competition immediately, but will be ranked according his/her/its position at the moment of overlapping.
Disqualification

An athlete is disqualified, for example, for using free technique in a classical race or intentionally obstructing another athlete.

The complete rules and regulations for Cross-Country Skiing can be found in the Rules and Publications section
Equipment
Bindings

The bindings secure only the toe of the boot to the ski.
Boots

Cross-Country boots are similar to running shoes. The boots for free technique are more rigid and have more ankle support than the boots used for classic technique.
Poles

For classic technique, the poles should extend to the armpit while standing. Baskets at the bottom of the poles provide a base for a strong push-off. For free technique, the poles are generally longer and stiffer and extend to the chin or mouth of the skier. The baskets and tips are designed like classic poles.
Skis

The skis used in cross-country are lighter and narrower than those used in alpine skiing and have long curved tips. The minimum length of skis for the classical events is 10cm less than the competitor's height, while the average length for skating or free technique skis is between 1.70 and 2 metres. The tips of skating skis also curve more.
Wax

The wax a skier chooses can often be the difference between winning and losing. Knowing what wax to use is determined by snow and weather conditions. There are two types of wax: glide wax and kick wax, also known as grip wax. Glide wax is used to decrease the friction between the skis and the snow. Kick wax is used to increase friction between the skis and the snow in order to prevent slipping.
Suit

Uses stretch fabric hugging the body, similar to a runner’s training clothing. Woollies and thick socks are definitely no longer fashionable.
Glossary
Classic technique

The traditional ski racing technique. Athletes use a diagonal stride in which both skis stay parallel to each other.
Free technique

The skating - or free - technique, which was developed in the 1970s, closely resembles the motions of speed skating, where one pushes the inside edge of the ski simultaneously backward and outward at about a 45-degree angle. It is usually faster than classic technique.
Glide wax

Wax used to decrease the friction between the skis and the snow. It is applied to the entire ski in free technique races, but only to the front and rear tips of the skis in classic races.
Grip wax

Also known as kick wax, it increases the friction between the skis and snow to improve traction. It is applied to the middle part of the skis for classic races.
Harries

A ski preparation technique in classic skiing used when kick wax is not appropriate for the conditions. Technicians use a wire brush to roughen the base of the skis.
Mass start

All competitors start together, and the first skier to pass the finish line is declared the winner.
Pursuit start

Pursuit events have a mass start and the athletes use both techniques within the same race. During a pit stop at the stadium after half of the race distance has been completed, the athletes change equipment from the classical to free technique.
Scramble leg

The first leg of a relay race. Named this way because relay races feature mass starts with everyone bunched together.
Staggered start

A start in which skiers leave at set intervals. The winner is the athlete with the best time.
Vertical

An uphill climb.

Source: Fis-Ski.com

Audi FIS Ski World Cup

Bringing the Audi FIS Ski World Cup closer or into big cities has long been a goal of FIS, after successful city events have already taken place in several disciplines, such as the sprints in Cross-Country Skiing, and aerial Freestyle and big air Snowboard competitions.

Following the successful World Cup events in Zagreb and the two Promotional Events on the large ramp in Moscow (RUS) in 2009, the 2010/11 season will feature a city parallel event as part of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup. The Munich Olympic Park (GER) will play host to this new event on 2nd January 2011.

"We are very pleased to have found such experienced and engaged partners as the Olympiapark München GmbH and the German Ski Association (DSV) for this event premiere. Thanks to their enthusiastic response it was possible to obtain the commitment and draft a very solid initial plan in just 3.5 weeks before the FIS Congress in Antalya," commented FIS Chief Race Director Günter Hujara.

"With Munich Olympic Park, we have a partner that has the necessary event management know-how, existing infrastructure and a long-term track record of executing similar mega-events, including a FIS Ski World Cup parallel slalom demonstration event in 1986 and FIS Snowboard World Cup events at the Olympiaberg in the early 2000's."

He continued:"The product is meeting with a positive market reaction and the marketing/sponsoring negotiations are currently in progress. We expect a massive global TV audience and at least 20'000 on-site spectators."

Besides the minimum FIS Alpine World Cup prize money purse of CHF 100'000, the athletes will be competing for Audi FIS Ski World Cup overall points, however not for the individual event point standings. The hosting nation may apply for one wild card for ladies and one for men if there are no qualified athletes among the top 15 ranked athletes. If the hosting nation is presented in the top 15, automatically the top ranked 16th athlete of the overall World Cup Starting List is qualified. These pioneers, who came primarily from Anglo-Saxon and Germanic backgrounds, immediately responded to the beauty of these mountains, the suitability of their gentle slopes for skiing and the magical atmosphere surrounding them. Thanks to their vision, the alliance between the Dolomites and winter sports continues to the present day, now that the Dolomites are a UNESCO National World Heritage Site. The experience of discovering one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in the world on skis is priceless.
Internationally recognized trails, such as Saslong and Gran Risa, or spectacular panoramic views at the summit of Lagazuoi (2,800 m), Sass Pordoi (2.950 m), Marmolada (3,342 m) and Cristallo/Forcella Staunies (2,930 m), all reachable by cablecar or skilift, offer breathtaking winter views of the snow-covered Dolomites. The same can be said of other, less well-known trails in the 12 ski areas of the Dolomites. Thanks to Dolomiti Superski it is possible to ski from one valley to the next, traveling the trails and enjoying the beautiful Alpine landscape, almost touching the vividly colored rocks – a powerful and unique experience enhanced by your encounter with the stone giants and an idea that seems like a dream: “I am skiing in the heart of a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.”

THE DOLOMITES the most beautiful mountains in the

Toward the end of the 19th century, the Dolomites saw numerous pioneering activities; the mountains were an excellent area for experimentation of various kinds. Bold British noblemen were the first to conquer the sharp peaks, the jagged summits and the sheer cliffs of the Dolomites. They were followed by Hapsburg climbers who wrote the most important chapters in the history of Dolomite mountain climbing.
Great climbers like the Viennese Paul Grohmann (1838–1908), the first to climb to the top of Tofana de Rozes and Mount Cristallo near Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Sassolungo in Val Gardena and the Three Peaks of Lavaredo in the Sesto Dolomites, loved these mountains and wrote about them in numerous publications. The Austrian Emil Zsigmondy (1861–1885) was also a pioneer in the history of Dolomite mountain climbing. He described them as a “delicious gem in the Alps”. The Lake Garda mountain climber, actor, and movie director Luis Trenker (1892-1990), who was born in Ortisei at the foot of the inimitable Sassolungo, documented his passion for these mountains in numerous books and films, which became known worldwide. Thanks to Trenker, the rocky shapes of the Dolomites became known for the first time on an international level. Finally there is the “king of the eight-thousanders,” Reinhold Messner. Since childhood he has loved the Dolomites. From the window of his house in Val di Funes he could admire the Odle Mountains and may have understood from the start that the mountains would always be with him. Messner has conquered all the highest mountains on the planet, but there has always been a soft spot in his heart for the Dolomites: “They are not the highest, but they are certainly the most beautiful mountains in the world”.
Majestic cliffs, tall sharp peaks, impassible overhangs and jagged summits. The variety of forms and colors and of the valleys that cross the Dolomites, however, have not only charmed the great mountain climbers of history, but great artists as well. Le Corbusier (Switzerland-France 1887–1965), perhaps the greatest contemporary architect, saw in the Dolomites “the most beautiful natural architecture in the world”.

A winter wonderland with plenty of snow

The snowfalls of the past days (up to 20-60 cm of fresh snow) have made the Dolomites even more beautiful than before. The remains of one adult, who died of natural causes, have recently been found near the Passo San Pellegrino area. For it was in 1929 that is not noted the presence of this wonderful animal in the Dolomites.

Probably this is a sample coming from the Balkans, Croatia and Slovenia area, as the now famous bear "Dino" that for some months has chosen the Dolomites as ideal place to enjoy his days.
These specimens are a rare confirmation of how many species are re-colonized the Belluno Dolomites: over the bear and the wolf also the majestic Golden Eagle and the beautiful Real Owl. Rare animals in addition to deer, roe deer, ibex, chamois, foxes, badgers, squirrels, rabbits and numerous species of birds.

An important signal of quality synonymous with these animals found in the natural area of Dolomiti Stars, in all areas of the Consortium by the Ski Civetta, in Falcade-Passo San Pellegrino, Arabba and the Marmolada. These are the same Dolomites recently elected to the Unesco world heritage natural good.

Source: Dolomitistars

Alto Adige Val Gardena

In Alto Adige nature is the real, great protagonist.

Unique massifs with accentuated tops, glaciers, alpine lakes, woods and slopes: this is the beautiful andfascinating expression of nature in Alto Adige! And beside this Alto Adige offers endless chances to get to know a rich artistic, historical, cultural andtraditional heritage in a land so close to both the north and the south, between the German world andItaly, gateway to the Mediterranean sea. Val Gardena is a mix between winter emotions and special offers, fully respecting its tradition of “Leading Mountain Resort of the World." From the first snowfall until the end of the season in April, Val Gardena attracts visitors with all-inclusive proposals and prices within everyone’s reach, with special attention to the needs of families. The start of the season is as spectacular as the end. Gardena offers a winter with countless attractions for every need. Val Gardena as a sports valley is equally renowned for events like the "Val Gardena Sprint", that is a cross-country evening skiing race. It takes place in rotation in one of the towns of the valley and the protagonists are the best cross-country athletes at an international level. "Sella Ronda Skimarathon", is a night alpinism skiing race that takes place around the Sella massif. "Val Gardena Ciasp", this winter is the eighth edition of this peculiar race with snowshoes. 500 kilometres of ski runs through a Dolomite landscape without equals. Independently from the sports attractions, Val Gardena is also a winter destination of the highest order. The official confirmation comes from the Internet Website “tripadvisor.com" according to which Val Gardena is one of the best European ski centres. 81 very modern ski-lifts, 175 kilometres of runs set between the rocky masses of the Sella, of the Sassolungo and Cir. Val Gardena is also an integral part of "Dolomiti Superski", a skiing carousel that is unique in the world for its magnitude and grandeur: 12 skiing areas, 450 ski-lifts and 1200 kilometres of ski slopes. In inviting refuges and mountain chalets built in typical Ladin style, dishes are prepared that recall the ancient culinary tradition of Val Gardena. All these factors together with the traditional hospitality of Valley-dwellers create the ideal conditions for an unforgettable holiday. Another important aspect of Val Gardena is certainly the altitude, snow is always guaranteed right down to the bottom of the valley. The tracks have artificial snow plants ensuring perfect skiing during the whole winter season. Val Gardena: synonym of snow, sun and fun. A winter sport with different rythms in Vallunga and Mount Pana. Val Gardena offers different attractions for lovers of relaxing and romantic sports. The lovers of cross-country skiing find in Vallunga, at the foot of the "Stevia" in the Natural Park Puez-Odle, a network of routes for beginners and experts such as the ring of 12 km that leads to "Pra da ri". Mount Pana, a sunny plateau has, in addition to the skiing slopes, a centre designed according to the most modern requirements of cross-country skiing. For those who do this sport on an excursion level, there is the "panoramic" route, and for the most demanding or for races there are different routes for a total of 30 km of slopes that follow precise signs and make it possible to change route at any moment. To go back to a holiday with a different pace, there are also different ways to enjoy the beauty that characterizes Val Gardena. To admire the enchanting landscapes that nature has given to this valley with such generosity, one can go to Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva. All different winter hiking places, some on the margin of the woods, others link towns. For example, the Planetary Trail in S.Cristina that follows a stretch of the hiking route that was once the train track of Val Gardena, built during the First World War and then removed in the early 1960s. A continuous coach service, the "Gherdëina Ski-Express" connects all the valley and allows the guests of Val Gardena to arrive close to the ski of runs and ski-lifts without having to use one’s car thus respecting the environment. The bus service is carried out throughout the season (please consult the timetables) and consists in the purchase of a weekly ticket. An evening bus service has been set up for those who wish to move around the valley in the late evening: "Val Gardena night bus"

HISTORY OF SKI SPORT AND SKI RACES IN VAL GARDENA

1900–1930 /1908 first ski race in the Dolomites Skiing as sports activity in the Val Gardena is dating back to the end of the 19th century and in 1908 the first Ski Club was founded who became a charter member of the Tyrolean Ski Association. Its name was the Dolomiten Alpen Ski Club Ladinia, soon followed by the Ski Club Sella. Also in 1908 the first documented ski race is being held from the Grödner Joch/Gardena Pass down to Plan, a tiny village nestled at the end of the Valley. More races were following, not only in the Valley but all around the Dolomite Mountains. 1930–1939 In the thirties, races became more professional: In 1932, the Italian Ski Federation nominates the first ski instructors in the valley and the first lifts are being built: A cable car from Ortisei to the Alpe di Siusi in 1935, and two years later two different sledge cable cars of 20 persons each in Selva, one on the Ciampinoi, one on the Costabella. Also in 1937, the national ski school of Val Gardena is founded and the National Ski Championships are being held in the valley. In 1939, everything is being stopped by the eruption of World War II and after 1945 development would be slow due to the huge social and economic difficulties. 1945-1960 In 1948, race activity is being resumed and again National Ski Championships are being organised. Participants were also Zeno Colo, Rolando Zanni, Vittorio Chierroni, Hermann Nogler, Celina Seghi, and other champions who would become famous in the years to come. In the fifties, the economy is improving and so is the interest for tourism and winter sports. Scofone, immigrated into the valley, and Engelbert Senoner of St.Ulrich/Ortisei are again organizing international races and the idea of an Alpine Combine is born, the Coppa dei tre Comuni Ladini. in 1959, this race is classified as FIS B and it is with this award that the Gardena valley takes the road which 11 years later will bring her to the historical World Ski Championships. 1960–1961 In 1960 Tschucky Kerschbaumer, a keen and active sportsman was elected president of the Ski Club Gardena. His immediate aim was to organize high class international competitions such as the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm and the Wengen Lauberhorn races. Young people from the valley were sent to these places in order to study how to efficiently and professionally run such events. Meanwhile, Edmund Dellago, Ski Club secretary, placed the candidacy of Val Gardena to organize two international events with the Italian Ski Federation, a downhill race on the Ciampinoi 3 and a slalom on the Ronce slope of Ortisei. 1961-1962 For the following year no men’s race were allotted to the Gardena Valley due to the rotation system BY FISI so a ladies’ FIS A race was organized on the Ciampinoi 4 and a slalom at S.Cristina. 1962-1963 No FIS A races for that winter, but the Valley’s enthousiasm is increasing and two FIS B races are held, one at Selva with Felix Denicolò as a winner and the other one on the Seceda mountain won by Carlo Senoner. A new local racers’ generation is surfacing: Gerhard Mussner, Ivo Mahlknecht, Giustina Demetz, and others, and a new idea by Erich Demetz is born – the organization of a World Ski Campionship in Val Gardena. in 1963, Erich Demetz is becoming president of the Ski Club Gardena. As he remembers, at the general assembly in October 22, 20 out of 22 people present had less then 20 years. These boys made their dream come true. 1964-1965 – Invention of FIS Ski World Cup by Serge Lang In 1965 the last FIS A race is being held, as in 1966 the Fis World Cup is being invented by Serge Lang. A very important event. Not only for the Gardena valley, but in general, as for the first time an Italian ski event is being televised by Eurovision. There is so much enthousiasm that the idea of a World Ski Championship is taking more and more shape. But Fabio Conci, president of the Italian Ski Federation, is skeptical about logistics, finances, and the naivité of these youngsters from the valley. These, however, are insisting and already during the FIS Congress of Mamaia in 1965 Tschucky Kerschbaumer and Erich Demetz are distributing candidature pamphlets during parties organized by world renown candidates like Kitzbühel, Davos, and Jackson Hole. 1966-1967 No race is being organized in 1966 and in the following year a delegation from the valley is bidding for the championships at the Beyrouth FIS Congress. The organization is perfect and "congress participants are surprised by the perfect candidature organization run by Demetz, Kerschbaumer, Sanoner, Dellago" (Sciare, June 1967). Nothing is left to chance and after the second votation the FIS president Marc Hodler announces Val Gardena as winner with 39 votes.. 1968-1969 In 1968, pre-championships are being held and in 1969 the first men’s and women’s downhill races are run on the newly built Saslong and Cir slopes. And there is a first rough time for the new Saslong slope: Karl Schranz refuses to start, pretending that the slope is "too easy". Infact, prior to the construction of this new slope, downhill racing was extremely difficulty and risky. Gates were being placed as few as possible and the racer put his life at risk on a slope which almost wasn’t marked. Typically, the winner was whoever found the shortest and most direct line. Gerhard Mussner, one of the local racers, remembers that once he had put a piece of wood in the snow so he would remember where to curve. Then he removed it so that his adversaries couldn’t "steal his personal line". The design of the Saslong slope was the result of a new philosophy of the FIS: No more horror-downhills, no more holes and mogus, no more dangerous rocks and extreme jumps (where Karl Schranz was undoubtly the best), but more safety in order that the race be won thanks to technique and not to the extreme risk. As a matter of fact, in the same Summer, the most extreme points of the "Lauberhorn", the "Hahnenkamm", and the "Tofane" would be shaven due to FIS instructions. The difference of the new Saslong slope towards the other "old" slopes is evidenced by its average speed of 111,600 km/h compared to 90,720 km/h for Kitzbühel, 84,240 km/h for Wengen, and 90,360 km/h for Cortina. World Ski Championships 1970 The 1970 World Championships have been an important mile stone not only for the history of Val Gardena - Gröden but also for the evolution of the organization of big sports events. They have been a work bench for new technologies, for experimenting new advertising means, but foremost for making this jewel of a Dolomite valley known all the world over. The Seventies The Post-Championships The 1970 World Ski Championships achieved a strong impact on the development of the Gardena/Gröden Valley. In the years right after the Championships, the (money and non) aristocracy of Europe (e.g. Sachs, Flick)flocked into the valley by helicopter. However, we were fully unprepared to be up to this elite level, as by the end of the sixties most of the hotels of Selva/Wolkenstein, due to refurbishing, were short of money and unable to offer top treatment. However, it took only a couple of years until they were able to double their room capacities. The 1970 had been financed, directly and indirectly, by the Italian Government, by the Trentino/South Tyrol region, and by the local South Tyrolean provincial government with a total of about 9.000 million liras and the local authorities of the valley hadn’t to come up but with 0,5% of the total expenditure. The 1975 Finals After the successful but tiresome organization of the Championships, it wasn’t that easy to begin from scratch again, until Erich Demetz, by founding a "Coordinatin Committee Gardena/Gröden) proposed to the FIS to organize a World Cup event which as of 1972 has become part of the yearly world cup circuit. The 1975 Finals became a historical event, when the three leading competitors Franz Klammer (21 years), Ingemar Stenmark (19 years), and Gustav Thöni (24 years) had to run the final event, a parallel slalom at Ortisei/St.Ulrich, all three of them with an equal amount of world cup points (240). Klammer was ousted right at the beginning by Helmut Schmalzl (at present FIS race director). The final race was run between Thöni and Stenmark. When they were ready for the start, 40.000 spectators held on their breath and when departed, a roar filled the valley. They did the run almost parallel until the third last gate when Thöni succeeded in beating Stenmark, to the delight of the public. These Finals also proved to be historic for the innovation of having for the first time a sponsor: Parmalat had bought sponsor rights for 25 million liras, thus opening new horizons for alpine ski race sponsoring. 1975-1980 With Thöni’s victory, the "blu avalanche" of Italy showed a steady decline and also showed the end of technical events in the valley, where mainly downhill talents were promoted. There was, though, and italian victory 1977 with Herbert Plank, but it took twenty years to see another italian racer on the podium (Ghedina 1996, 1998, 1999) while Peter Müller also ahd three firsts (1979, 1980, 1988) and only "emperor" Franz Klammer succeeded four times (1975, 1976, 1976, 1982). "Lost times" A strange thing happened in 1978 when after competitor No. 9 (Sepp Walcher) the time taking equipment went out of order. The event was repeated and won by Erik Haker (NOR) who already in the first run was first when interrupted. Second was Peter Müller who in the following year would win the Saslong downhill. The Eighties The big jump Uli Spiess’s (AUT) long jump over the Camel Hunches on December 15, 1980 was considered sensational. With a speed of 100 km/h this athlete made a 70 m jump right over the last two hunches, "flying" 10 m high. (For more details, click here). Lots of competitors tried to copy him and ran into bad accidents, like Peter Müller (SUI), Anton Jimmy Steiner (AUT), "Much" Mayr (ITA), and Giorgio Piantanida (ITA). As a consequence, the OC, backed by FIS, decided to to shorten the jump to 50-60 m "only". The great Marc Girardelli, however, was never tempted to try the jump and created his own line which to this very day is called the "Girardelli line". (more over the jump) Club 5 In 1987, the Saslong race was the second event (after Val d’Isère) to open the circuit of the 5 "classic" downhills, i.e. "Big 5", after Rich Demetz’s and Herwig Grosch’s (Kitzbühel OC) idea. Their intention was to put these five races on Europe’s most famous slopes (Daille – Val d’Isère, Saslong – Gardena/Gröden, Lauberhorn – Wengen, Streif – Kituzbühel, and Kreuzeck -- Garmisch-Partenkirchen to top level world wide. After a FIS intervention, the name "Big 5" was modified into "Club 5"). For more information of Club5+ click here. The Nineties When in 1993 a genuine outsider, Markus Foser (LIE) had won the downhill, the starting time was definitely delayed to 12.45 when virutally identic light conditions would be available for all the competitors. The most outstanding fact of the past ten years was certainly the technical and the technological development: Competitors improved their performances, manufacturers their hard-ware and the organizers the slopes. A direct consequences of these improvements was the necessity to "defuse" some of the fastest and most insidious parts of the slope by slightly changing the line, by enlarging the "walls" and the entering of the "Ciaslat". By doing this, the track has been brought back to its natural morphology, increasing the technical demands of this classical course. Thanks to these achievements, the Saslong has remained one of the few courses world wide where the running time has stayed above the two minutes. The Future The Saslong Cable Car Company wants to complete its plans of enlarging the slope, including the finish schuss. Once completed, together with the new electronically-deviced snow making equipment and the completed finish building inaugurated in 1998, the Saslong will be one of the most complete and reliable courses of the entire World Cup Circuit. 40th anniversary of the Ski World Cup In 2005 the International Ski Federation FIS celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Alpine Ski World Cup. Alto Adige/Südtirol was the centre of attention as it played host to this important celebration. The World Cup winners of all times were invited to Val Gardena and Alta Badia for the "Champions Celebration", which took place during the world cup competitions (Super G, Descent, Giant Slalom) on the 16th, 17th and 18th of December 2005.

Video - Val Gardena

2010 U.S. Alpine Ski Team

Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, and Julia Mancuso lead a talent filled group of athletes named to the 2010 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. Skiing in Trentino is terrific, but not everything.
Needless to say you can enjoy all the opportunities offered on the snow: Alpine skiing, cross-country, snowboarding, ski touring, snow-shoeing, Nordic walking, plus skating, sleddogging and ice-climbing. Almost 800 km of pistes, technologically advanced lift passes, two circuits only (Skirama and Dolomiti Superski) covering nearly the whole region, about a dozen fun parks for board enthusiasts, enchanting routes through woods and on plateaus, silent peaks to explore on touring skis, 500 km of trails and about twenty centres for cross-country skiing. And what else? Over 300 modern lifts, programmed snowmaking covering 90% of the pistes, hotels and other accommodation establishments boasting a potential of over 400 thousand beds of excellent quality divided between 1551 hotels, 174 guest houses and then camp-sites, agritours, B&Bs and second homes. Not only excellent lodging, but also board: here wines are superb and local dishes delicious. Overall we thank nature: statistics show that snowfalls are abundant (on average 4 metres at an altitude of 2,000m) and eight out of ten days are sunny. Families seeking snow will find a great number of packages and services planned specifically for them. For example free lift passes and discounts. There are also Kindergartens where infants are looked after by qualified staff.

In Trentino it doesn’t take much to be filled with a feeling of effervescent pleasure: strolling in a Nature Park, recognising the scents of the forests, admiring the superb panoramas. As scientific studies have shown the body gains important benefits from even a brief stay at a medium altitude, between 1000 and 2000 metres. Not only: at the same time the mind is regenerated and everyday stress is forgotten, perhaps while listening to a babbling brook, or admiring the peaks as they turn pink in the setting sun, or breathing in the mountain air, or sipping the water of spring.

Not to be forgotten the three Nature Parks in Trentino (Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino, Adamello-Brenta and Stelvio) that also offer visitors a rich calendar of activities and events in winter.

As a fitting complement to the outstanding Alpine environment, Trentino boasts hotels able to ensure the best in the field of well-being, those with the sign “Vita Nova – Trentino Wellness”. Here the guest will find an oasis entirely dedicated to relaxation and fitness with gyms and equipped rooms, various kinds of saunas, special water jets and showers, pools and Jacuzzis , a beauty centre with qualified staff and a wide range of personalised treatments.
The spas also offer well-being treatments and together constitute a real health circuit. Four of these are open in winter.

First nature, then history forged this land leaving an indelible mark of art and culture. Lying between northern Europe and the Mediterranean, Trentino has been a country of transit and encounters since ancient times and therefore has many layers of styles and memories. Today monuments, churches, castles and small elegant towns remain. First and foremost Trento, the capital of the province, renowned for having hosted the longest and most famous Council of the Catholic Church (1545 – 1563). There are 17 museums of considerable importance scattered throughout Trentino and many small collections and displays in the civic museums. The two main museums, Buonconsiglio in Trento and the Mart in Rovereto, constantly host international exhibitions.

Worth mentioning is the “Fiemme Ski Jazz”, the most important jazz festival on the snow in the whole of the Alps, held in mid-March.

Various types of traditional and extremely attractive events are held during Christmastime and Carnival. The atmosphere created around the street markets is really incomparable: the coloured lights, sounds and scents around the stalls selling local products announce the arrival of Christmas in many towns and villages.

At Carnival, instead, ancient, pagan rites resurface in the popular folk traditions. Not to be missed the traditional Ladinian masks.

Trentino, a paradise for cross-country skiing

The Super Nordic Skipass is dedicated to cross-country skiing, giving access to 19 cross-country centres and a total 1.200 kilometres of tracks, between Trentino and other districts. Each associated centre has a Skipass-Keyring station that records access to the facilities.

The tracks in these cross-country centres are always in perfect condition – in fact they are constantly groomed and closed when the quality of the ski surface cannot be maintained – updates on the state of the centre can be found on the website (http://www.supernordicskipass.it/).

New images from Tonale pass available

<div style="FLOAT: right; Among these there are eight cult pistes of exceptional technical difficulty to be tackled flat out.
First of all the “Canalone Miramonti” in Madonna di Campiglio where the important «3-Tre» is held every two years, the slalom with a capital “S”, with extreme slopes that leave you breathless. Not to be missed the “Ciampac” piste in Alba di Canazei, a very technical and enjoyable run with many changes in gradient, a small paradise completely immersed in a forest right down to the valley. The “Paradiso”piste on Passo del Tonale is a very interesting run on which to test your athletic condition, where there is no question of being bored thanks to the new and fast lift. The “Salizzona” piste on the Altopiano di Folgaria is also a difficult slope and one of the favourites of the Rovereto champion Davide Simoncelli as it is only a few kilometres from his home.
Those who love to draw sweeping dynamic curves in absolute safety and tranquillity should attempt the “Tognola”piste at San Martino di Castrozza The “Tomba” piste, instead, on Ciampedie in Vigo di Fassa requires maximum concentration right from the first serpentines, due to its sudden changes of gradient and almost extreme drop in height.
Definitely exciting is the five kilometre long “Olimpica Due” on Paganella, with its drop in height of one thousand metres and continual changes of direction. Lastly the renewed “Olimpia”piste at Alpe del Cermis which is seven kilometres long, smooth at the beginning and difficult at the end.

World Alpine Rock Festival December 2009

On the 22nd of December 2009, Paganella ski is holding the WORLD ALPINE ROCK FESTIVAL 2009.
16 top world-class skiers will battle it out at the Paganella Ski World Alpine Rockfest. Twelve ski stars will be enlisted directly, and the other four athletes will be selected before the competition. Each of the stars has, in fact, the chance to choose two friends-colleagues from their national team who will race against each other in a sort of afternoon pre-qualifier. The real race will be held at night under the floodlights – and the finest four will make it to the final. “I’ve been saying we need something new in the world of skiing, and this is just the kind of event I was looking for, so I signed up right away”, said Miller.

The protagonists of the Paganella Ski World Alpine Rockfest ski challenge will be 16 ski champions who will fight it out on the slopes in four thrilling runs. But there will be no one-on-one heats. It’ll be all against the clock, with the last four times eliminated after each run, until only the four finalists are left to battle it out for the final victory, and the 100.000 euro prize.

The twelve ski stars will be selected on the basis of their popularity, their success in sports events, their style, their fame, and their nationality. Each of them will have the chance to “invite” two other athletes. Davide Simoncelli - the local champ – will be able to choose four. The 26 “selected” athletes will compete in one run, and the first four will make it to the select group of 16 finalists. The athletes who have already confirmed their participation include: Davide Simoncelli, Italy - Bode Miller and Ted Ligety, USA - Felix Neureuther, Germany - Julian Lizeroux, France - John Kucera, Canada - Marco Buechel, Liechtenstein - Mattias Hargin, Sweden.

The second big thing at the Paganella Ski World Alpine Rockfest is the combination of Great Music and Ski Champions.
